It has adjustable speed settings and is very user-friendly. It needs to be plugged in while in use, which is fine for me as a beginner. Initially, my first order got lost in transit, which made me worry about the low price and whether it might be a scam. However, the company quickly sent out a replacement, and I was able to unpack and use it right away.
In my first/before picture, you can see that I have mostly healthy nail beds, but there’s a lot of thick, keratinized growth around the lateral and proximal folds. Surprisingly, that first picture shows significant improvement compared to when I was still biting and picking at my nails. I learned to apply shellac/gel polish at home to help curb these habits, but my crusty cuticles just keep coming back, no matter how many bottles of cuticle remover or oil I use. I invested in sharp, high-quality nippers for regular trimming, but they never provided the precision I wanted, leaving my cuticles looking ragged and thick. That’s when I became intrigued by dry/Russian manicure videos.
I used this tool on clean, dry hands, keeping alcohol wipes handy to clean the dust as I worked, and I also had a freestanding magnifying glass with a bright light for better visibility. I am genuinely thrilled with the results from my first try! Check out my before and after photos! I know it’s recommended to use the tool after removing old polish, but I decided to keep my old polish on for my first attempt as a safeguard against potential slips and beginner mistakes. That turned out to be a good choice because I did experience a few slips while I got used to the tool’s speed and angles.
Next up: polish removal! I’m looking forward to using the mandrel bit and sanding rings to quickly remove the top layer of my gel polish before soaking off the rest, which should save me some time.
Overall, I comfortably recommend this tool for conservative home use. Just be sure to spend some time watching tutorials by reputable experts (Erica’s Dry Manicure channel on YouTube is a fantastic resource) and take your time. It should never hurt to use this tool, and you should avoid cutting or abrading healthy tissue. It comes with everything you need to get started, and I appreciate how small and lightweight the handpiece is; it feels like holding a fat marker or highlighter, making it much easier to maneuver than the hand drills I typically use for wood and stone carving. While it may not be sturdy enough for a busy salon environment, and I wouldn’t recommend sharing the bits due to hygiene concerns, it’s an excellent value for amateur and beginner needs, especially considering that professional-quality e-files and drill bits can cost hundreds of dollars. I might even pick up a spare for finer artwork and engraving projects.
